Maria Fernanda Cardoso
Bio

Maria Fernanda Cardoso (Australia) is well known for her unconventional use of materials and the use of animals and insects as inspiration in her work that involves sculpture installation, video and performances. Her interests lie in chaos and complexity theories, where simple units form complex systems and if you follow those systems it somehow connects us to the universe.

Born in Columbia, Cardoso has lived and worked in Sydney, Australia, since 1997. Her most known project, the Cardoso Flea Circus, has been exhibited internationally. She represented Columbia in the 50th Venice Biennale and created her first Public Art work in conjunction with Miami Basel 2005. Her work has been selected for major international survey exhibitions, including Material witness, Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland, United States (2003); Modern starts: people, places, things, Museum of Modern Art, New York, United States (1999); the 4th Havana Biennale (1991); and the 5th Bogotá Biennale (1990), in which she was awarded first prize. She has lectured at the Californian Institute of the Arts, U.S.; the Universidad de los Andes; and the San Francisco Art Institute, U.S. In 2002 she received an Australia Council New Work Grant.
