Jamelie Hassan Jamelie Hassan's diverse multi-media installation works have dealt with questions of colonialism, patriarchy, militarism, censorship, sexuality and cultural identity. Based in London, she has also made contributions through artist-run centres, community and heritage projects. Since the 1970's, she has exhibited widely in Canada and internationally. In 2001 she was awarded the Governor General's Award in Visual Arts. Her works are in numerous public collections including the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, the Canada Council Art Bank, Ottawa, the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, Museums/ London Art, The Glenbow Art Gallery, Calgary, Alberta, Dalhousie University Art Gallery, Halifax, N.S., the McIntosh Gallery, The University of Western Ontario, the Woodland Cultural Centre,Six Nations, Brantford, Ont. and the New Museum of Contemporary Art, NewYork, N.Y, USA. `Her commissioned works include the Ottawa Courthouse and the London Regional Cancer Clinic, Victoria Hospital, London, Ontario. She was awarded the commission for the creation of artwork for winners of 2002 Governor General's Award. Her commitments have involved highly diverse sites including her participation on the advisory team of artists, consultants and architects, in dialogue with communities affected by the LRT (Light Rapid Transit) on Spadina Avenue in Toronto, developing concepts and sites for public art. Internationally her research has involved an examination of the post-war reconstruction of Beirut and the building of the new library in Alexandria, Egypt. She has served as a member of the board and on advisory panels for the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto. In 2001 she was an advisor on two London, Ont. community arts progams, OpenAir: bike, benches, canoes & beyond, public art project and a Gathering of Good Minds, First Nations' cultural program in London, Ontario. She is presently part of the Museum/London advisory team co-ordinating a conference in conjunction with the London exhibition in the spring 2003 of Greg Curnoe, Art & Stuff organized by the Art Gallery of Ontario.
