Wayne Clifford (1943- )
Wayne Clifford was born in Toronto in 1944. He received his B.A. from the University of Toronto
during which he joined a small community of students including Stan Bevington, Dennis Reid,
Dorris and Judith Cowan, and David Bolduc. Bevington, having started his fledgling
Coach House Press in 1964, asked Clifford to find him some poetry manuscripts to experiment with.
Wayne solicited works from George Bowering, Victor Coleman, bpNichol and Michael Ondaatje.
Shortly thereafter he pursued graduate studies in creative writing at the University of Iowa.
His association with Coach House continued throughout the 1970s and early 1980's when he
returned to Canada to teach creative writing at Kingston, Ontario's St. Lawrence College.
Clifford's Man in a window was the first Coach House poetry title, illustrated with
treated nude photos of Dorris Cowan by Dennis Reid. This was followed by the self-published
and -produced chapbook, Eighteen, An ache in the ear (with illustrations and
design by David Bolduc), and Glass Passages, [Oberon Press] also with Bolduc illustrations.
