POINTS ON THE GRID

DARK AROUND LIGHT

How to wipe the night away
to wish the sunrise in
that is in you
....................This beleaguers me
lying here alone
the phone
................under my hand
a whole city of night
.......between us

My desklamp is on the table beside me
its light is turned back
..................................by the window
I’ve promised not to call you——
I cannot write——
All the couriers die in their tracks——
The night is not out there——
............is it

Is it
darkness out there?
Is there nothing but darkness
.........between us?

Then I can run thru the streets
poking flashlight light
into the road before me
waving the torch around
wiping away the night

Or I can pick up the telephone
and whisper into your ear
call you and promise no more
call to you

....................and wipe the night away
