Rewards for Ambitious Trees
Fame to trees may come
Through at last advancing
On the savage dunce
Who counts the syllables of time
In the castle near Dunsinane.
Some achieve the wearing of a young lady
Who is pursued in her farthinggale
By a hot rash ravisher.
She clings like a pink wrist-watch
Imploring one to be hollow.
Some are very old
Or are planted by Bismarck
Or caught Wordsworth’s eye.
Victory falls to those
That fall on people
Or kill a longhaired prince.
Some prophesy with wooden scream
The wicked gfarmer’s death
The sunk sun
The fallen star
The rumpled nebulae . . . .
