Ryerson Press (1945-70)

Toronto
Lorne Pierce (1890-61) and John Robert Colombo, who was editor from 1962 through to the sale of Ryerson to McGraw-Hill in 1970

Shortly after its foundation in Toronto in 1829, the Methodist Book Room began to issue denominational materials. They were producing regular books to the trade by 1835. The name Ryerson Press was adopted in 1919 to honour minister and educator Egerton Ryerson (1803-1882). Lorne Pierce was appointed literary adviser in 1920 and as editor in 1922. Pierce's fierce devotion to finding and developing distinctly Canadian writers was initially met with some resistance by the Methodists who had hired him but eventually he prevailed. He introduced an impressive list of poets to Canadian readers, including E.J. Pratt, Raymond Knister, Earle Birney, A.J.M. Smith, Dorothy Livesay, Louis Dudek and P.K. Page.
