Gyula Kalko biography
Artist and conservator Gyula Kalko completed his art training at the Acadmey of Fine Arts and Academy
of Applied Arts in Budapest, Hungary before moving to Canada in the early 1980s. His epic series, The Circle of History, was
begun in 1992. Combining simulated x-ray panels with sections in full colour, the paintings in
this series draw striking parallels and connections between the past and the present through selective
appropriation of details from the history of Western art. Prior to moving to Canada, Kalko was
a successful artist in Hungary producing drawing and artistic graphic work. He worked internationally
as an exhibition designer and as a mural painter on special projects, including a major commission in
Moscow. Kalko has won several awards and has exhibited his fine art and commercial work widely
in solo and group exhibitions in Hungary and abroad. Kalko currently lives and works in Toronto.
