Greg Staats biography
Raised on the Six Nations Reserve near Brantford, Ontario, Staats is a photographic and video artist
currently based in Toronto. His work is firmly rooted in the Great Law of Peace and honours the
Mohawk oral culture, linking it to an evolving personal and visual continuum. Frequently taking
the form of portraiture or more recently a focused attention on found objects, Staats' photographs have
been profiled in a number of monographs, journals and newspapers. He has received numerous artistic
commissions, including thirteen photographs commissioned for the Banff Centre Permanent Collection; thirty
photographs commissioned for a permanent ecotourism display for the Mushkegowuk First Nations Council;
and four photo murals for Toronto's Metro Hall building. One of Canada's best-known photographic
artists, Staats' work is held in the collections of the Canadian Museum of Civilization, Winnipeg Art
Gallery, Canada Council Art Bank, and McMichael Canadian Art Collection among others.
