Moko Jumbie Dance explores how ideas, imagery and belief
systems from Africa permeated the diaspora and persist in
contemporary times. Moko Jumbies, revered and feared stilt walkers
that look into the past and future from their high perch, were uprooted
from Guinea and transplanted to the Americas by enslaved Africans.
Wood’s Moko Jumbies, created in a range of artistic media,
usher viewers into an exploration of African history and presence
in the Yonge and Dundas neighbourhood.
