Bani Abidi
Karachi, Pakistan
The city has come to a halt. Roads are blocked to make way for the unhampered movement of an official
motorcade. School children with crumpled paper flags in hand wait patiently to welcome the arriving dignitary.
A reception committee of officious bureaucrats pace up and down the red carpet. The entire city awaits
the arrival of a dignitary, who poignantly, never arrives. "Reserved" reflects on a society
hamstrung by an increasingly aloof and militaristic government. The work explores the tensions inherent
to a culture held hostage by political spectacle.
