Stephen Cruise - Statement
A MATERIALIZATION, 2008
Since 1973, the practice\evolution of work has developed from a continued reliance upon the observation
of/attention to the concerns for site.
The begin\Nature in the formulation of a site-work for Art in the Fall at 401 Richmond has its genesis
in the entitled work lay of the land iris, 2004, a solo exhibition held at the Koffler Gallery, Toronto.
One thousand digital prints were pinned to the curved walls of the gallery creating a panoramic canopy
of leaves - an interior, responsive echo of the surrounding ravine.
It began the previous year, when 100’s of leaves were collected, pressed, directly scanned, arranged
within a 13” x 19” format and printed. The edges of each print were hand-cut allowing for
the sheets to be entwined before being pinned directly onto the gallery walls.
The site-work for Art in the Fall utilizes the basic elements of the initial work, i.e. cut-out sheets
of red, yellow\brown and green leaves. The new, installed ‘painting’ resides as a momentary,
reflected view – a revisitation of material with the manifestation of the contemporary landscape.

paper, ink, map pins.
