Gallery44 - Outreach Protection - Statement
A projected exhibition of photography and writing by youth from:
LAMP, Native Learning Centre, Regent Park Focus, Sketch and Supporting Our Youth.

OUTREACH Program: As a photo-based community organization, Gallery 44 seeks to break
down barriers to the arts. OUTREACH encourages youth to develop their creative process and
understand the power of the photographic image. Working in conjunction with five community
organizations, Gallery 44's OUTREACH program provides photography workshops free of charge
to youth who traditionally have not had access to photography as a medium of creative expression.

In 2008, youth in the OUTREACH program have created photographs that examine the theme of
PROTECTION. Brainstorming sessions and discussions in each group with artist educators began
the workshops and ideas and sparks were ignited in the youth. Using black and white photography,
these youth have now created compelling photographs with a particular focus on the notion of protection,
specifically from their perspective as young people from diverse backgrounds living in downtown Toronto.

Gallery 44 gratefully acknowledges The Catherine and Maxwell Meighen Foundation, F. K. Morrow Foundation,
The McLean Foundation and The Keg Spirit Foundation for their support of OUTREACH.

Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography is a non-profit artist-run centre committed
to the advancement of contemporary photography. Our goal is to contribute to the dialogue on
contemporary photographic art practices and to foster its support, understanding and appreciation
through education and exhibitions. We are supported by our members, patrons, and sponsors,
The Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, and the City of Toronto through
the Toronto Arts Council.  Registered Charity # 119247310RR0001
