Amy Uyeda - Statement
A fascination with city parks and playgrounds is what drives my art. I am interested in the sectors of nature found in urban areas, and how they differ among various cities in different parts of the world. While growing up in Toronto and whilst traveling abroad I find myself drawn to these spaces because they are a sort of getaway among trees, in large cities of concrete and metal. Playgrounds interest me because of how they evolve- standards made by cities affect both how new generations play in parks and changing aesthetics. Public parks are an area in flux; an area of congregation, and social interaction.
Aesthetically, I have always been interested in the formal aspects of line and colour; the contrast between organic and architectural lines. Focusing on city parks is conducive to my interest in this aesthetic because the rigidity and geometry of city architecture against the texture of natural foliage creates an interesting visual tension. I work with colour lithography because it is drawing- based and emphasized the work of the hand. There is an element of chance that makes each outcome unique.
