Artist Statement
How We Live

The formal concerns of painting, issues of colour, line and composition
are the continued focus of my work. My subject matter is drawn from
both urban and rural contemporary life.

These ‘genre’ paintings, explore bank towers, shopping malls and
amusement arcades. Environments that bombard us with auditory and
visual displays creating a sensory overload. Working with an abstract
application these images vibrate with the delicate interplay between
what is seen and what is remembered. Examining the relationship
between architecture and human behaviour, I examine how simple
gestures can reveal a personality within the impersonal.

The locations are recognizably Toronto, yet the work addresses the
universality of modern urban architecture. From sterile and
bland to cacophonous and overwhelming, these paintings convey the
sense of dislocation often experienced in large public spaces.

Oct./Nov. 2003.
